McCool Junction, originally known as McCool, was platted in 1886 when the railroad was extended to that point. The city was named for Daniel McCool, a railroad official. By 1888 the town was at the junction of two railroads.
As of the census of 2010, there were 409 people, 162 households, and 121 families residing in the village. The population density was 870.2 inhabitants per square mile (336.0/km2). There were 172 housing units at an average density of 366.0 per square mile (141.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 96.1% White, 1.0% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 0.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.9% of the population.
There were 162 households of which 39.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 25.3% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
