State of Idaho Drug Testing News

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2017, Idaho had approximately 103 overdose deaths that involved or related to opioids. This puts them at a rate of 6.2 deaths per 100,000 persons which is well under half of the national average of 14.6 deaths per 100,000 persons. With this information, it was revealed that prescription opioids continued to be the main driver of deaths that involved drugs, with 63 of the 103 overdose death cases relating to prescriptions.

Research also revealed that in the same year Idaho providers wrote 70.3 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons. While this represents Idaho's lowest prescribing rate in over 10 years, it remains higher than the national average of 58.7 opioid prescriptions (CDC). The overall rise in the rate of overdose deaths involving opioid prescriptions has not followed this trend. However, in the past year, drug overdose deaths involving prescription opioids declined from 4.7 to 3.8 deaths per 100,000 persons.

To help prevent any more drug overdoses, especially those related to prescription drugs, Southeast Idaho Public Health has partnered with the Idaho Office of Drug Policy and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare's Division of Public Health. This partnership focuses on Idaho's issues concerning both licit prescription opioid pain relievers and illicit sources such as heroin, according to Southeastern Idaho Public Health.
