Anawalt is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. At one time it was known as Jeanette. It is named in honor of James White Anawalt, who was then manager of Union Supply Company, a subsidiary of the United States Steel Company. The population was 226 at the 2010 census. Coal mining was the town's chief industry.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.57 square miles (1.48 km2), all of it land.
As of the census of 2010, there were 226 people, 91 households, and 62 families residing in the town. The population density was 396.5 inhabitants per square mile (153.1/km2). There were 135 housing units at an average density of 236.8 per square mile (91.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 88.9% White, 9.3% African American, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.4% of the population.
There were 91 households of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 19.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 31.9% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.97.
