Hancock was laid out in 1871 when the Great Northern Railway was extended to that point. The city was named for Joseph Woods Hancock, a county official. A post office has been in operation at Hancock since 1871.
Hancock is a city in Stevens County, Minnesota. Minnesota Highway 9 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), of which 1.00% is water. The elevation is 1,155 ft (352m) above sea level.
As of the census of 2010, there were 765 people, 302 households, and 197 families residing in the city. The population density was 772.7 inhabitants per square mile (298.3/km2). There were 334 housing units at an average density of 337.4 per square mile (130.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.8% White, 0.5% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 1.2% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
