Smithfield was a station on the Louisville and Cincinnati Railroad. A post office has been in operation in Smithfield since 1851.

Smithfield is located in southwestern Henry County at 38°23?8?N 85°15?21?W? / ?38.38556°N 85.25583°W? / 38.38556; -85.25583 (38.385521, -85.255940). It is 7 miles (11 km) southwest of New Castle, the Henry County seat, 8 miles (13 km) southeast of La Grange, and 32 miles (51 km) northeast of Louisville.
