As of the census of 2000, there were 1,948 people, 805 households, and 562 families residing in the borough. The population density is 2,844.0 people per square mile (1,106.1/km²). There were 842 housing units at an average density of 1,229.3 per square mile (478.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.87% White, 0.05% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.18% of the population.
There were 805 households, out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.
