Rockdale is located at 41°30?27?N 88°6?55?W? / ?41.50750°N 88.11528°W? / 41.50750; -88.11528 (41.507480, -88.115233). It is immediately south of the city of Joliet, and is about 36 miles southwest of Chicago.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,888 people, 762 households, and 473 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,377.4 people per square mile (922.7/km²). There were 826 housing units at an average density of 1,040.1 per square mile (403.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 82.89% White, 0.85% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 10.86% from other races, and 4.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 21.98% of the population.
There were 762 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 31.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.11.
