Jeffersonville was laid out in 1831. The village derives its name from Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States. A post office has been in operation at Jeffersonville since 1834.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.74 square miles (4.51 km2), of which 1.70 square miles (4.40 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,203 people, 502 households, and 322 families residing in the village. The population density was 707.6 inhabitants per square mile (273.2/km2). There were 574 housing units at an average density of 337.6 per square mile (130.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 92.3% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
