Harrisville was founded in 1826 by Ephraim Harris. Harrisville was incorporated in 1846 by joining Harrisville and Reedsville. Harrisville had its first school in 1830, and in 1856 a high school was built.
Harrisville is located near the northwestern border of Butler County at 41°8?6?N 80°0?35?W? / ?41.13500°N 80.00972°W? / 41.13500; -80.00972 (41.134966, -80.009590). Pennsylvania Routes 8 and 58 intersect in the center of the borough. Route 8 leads south 21 miles (34 km) to Butler, the county seat, and north 21 miles (34 km) to Franklin on the Allegheny River, while Route 58 leads east 18 miles (29 km) to Foxburg on the Allegheny River and west 4 miles (6 km) to Grove City.
As of the census of 2000, there were 883 people, 323 households, and 231 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,079.5 people per square mile (415.8/km²). There were 346 housing units at an average density of 423.0 per square mile (162.9/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.19% White, 0.57% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.79% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.11% of the population.
