STD Definitions/Descriptions

STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease, also known as STI or Sexually Transmitted Infection, meaning that these diseases are most often, but not exclusively, spread by sexual intercourse.

STDs are passed from one person to another through sexual activity which can include vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse and/or anal intercourse. Though not as common, STDs can also be transmitted through intimate physical contact such as heavy petting.

STDs do not always cause symptoms, or they may only cause mild symptoms. This makes it very possible to have an infection and not know it. Therefore, if you are sexually active it is important to get tested at least once a year. You will find the most common types of STD and STI testing below.

HIV - HIV is a sexually transmitted disease (that can be spread outside of sexual contact) known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It is the virus that causes AIDS and interferes with the body's ability to fight infections.

Herpes 1 and 2 - Herpes is an infection caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus). This virus affects the external genital, anal region, mucosal surfaces and skin in other parts of the body. There are two types of herpes simplex viruses: HSV-1 9 herpes type 1, or oral herpes) and HSV-2 (herpes type 2, or genital herpes).

Gonorrhea - Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted disease that can cause infections in the genitals, rectum and throat for both men and women. If untreated it can cause serious health issues, however, if it is caught in time it can be cured with the right medicine.

Chlamydia - Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease that may not show symptoms. However, those that do show symptoms may experience genital pain and discharge from the vagina or penis. If left untreated it can cause damaging effects to the woman's reproductive system.

Syphilis - Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that develops in different stages. The first stage involves a painless sore on the genitals, rectum or mouth. After that initial sore heals, the second stage is a rash. Then, there are no symptoms until years later which is the final stage - damaged brain, nerves, eyes and/or heart.

Many STDs can be easily cured with medication, so you can just finish your treatment and get on with your life. And even though some STDs can't be cured, there are lots of ways to treat your symptoms and prevent you from giving your STD to anyone you have sex with.

People with STDs can be in relationships, have sex, and live totally normal lives. Most people get an STD at least once, and millions are living with STDs now. Having an STD is nothing to feel ashamed of, and it doesn't mean you're "dirty" or a bad person , it just means you're a pretty normal human who got an infection. The reality is that STDs can happen to anybody who's ever been sexual with someone, which is almost everybody on earth. And a few STDs can be spread in non-sexual ways, too.

Charlotte Amalie , located on the island of St. Thomas, is the capital and the largest city of the United States Virgin Islands, founded in 1666 as Taphus (meaning "beer house" or "beer hall"). In 1691, the town was renamed to Charlotte Amalie after Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1650–1714), queen consort to King Christian V of Denmark-Norway. It has a deep-water harbor that was once a haven for pirates and is now one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean, with about 1.5 million/plus cruise ship passengers landing there annually. Protected by Hassel Island, the harbor has docking and fueling facilities, machine shops, and shipyards and was a U.S. submarine base until 1966. The Town has been inhabited for centuries. When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1493, the area was inhabited by Caribs, Arawaks, Ciboney and Taíno native peoples. It is on the southern shore at the head of Saint Thomas Harbor. In 2010 the City had a population of 18,481, which makes it the largest city in the Virgin Islands Archipelago. Hundreds of ferries and yachts pass by the Town each week.

The City is known for its Danish colonial architecture, building structure and history. Dozens of streets and places throughout the City have Danish names. Charlotte Amalie has buildings of historical importance including St. Thomas Synagogue, the second-oldest continually practicing synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, and Frederick Lutheran Church. The Town has a long history of pirates, especially myths of Bluebeard, and facts and stories of Blackbeard (Edward Teach). In the 17th century, the Danes built both Blackbeard's Castle and Bluebeard's Castle attributed to the pirates. Blackbeard's Castle is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Another tourist attraction is Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands Archipelago. A copy of the Liberty Bell and freed slave blowing a conch shell are in Emancipation Park, which is both a source of national pride and as a tourist attraction.

Before the time of the Danish West Indies (1754–1917), the City was known as Taphus for its many beer halls. Taphus is Danish and directly translates to "beer house", "beer hall", or (most literally) "tap house". In 1691 the Town received a more respectable name by being named Charlotte Amalie in honor of Danish King Christian V’s wife, Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1650–1714). Between 1921 and 1936, the Island was called St. Thomas by the United States. In 1936 the capital was recognized as Charlotte Amalie.

On his second voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus encountered Native Americans living in the present-day archipelago of the United States Virgin Islands. Archaeological records indicate that the islands have been home to native american people groups, including the Taíno, Arawak, Kalinago/Carib, and the Ciboney people. Several of them lived in present-day Charlotte Amalie in small fishing communities. As was the case in most of the Americas, the native population died relatively quickly from disease when the Europeans settled. As the Spanish early focused their energy on Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands, Saint Thomas remained unprotected for a long time, leaving Charlotte Amalie’s sheltered coves to be frequented by pirates, including Blackbeard and the alleged Bluebeard, as well as mariners and European settlers.
