According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 121.0 square miles (313.4 km²), of which, 117.3 square miles (303.8 km²) of it is land and 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²) of it (3.06%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,711 people, 699 households, and 499 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.6 people per square mile (5.6/km²). There were 1,220 housing units at an average density of 10.4 per square mile (4.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.60% White, 0.06% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.88% of the population.

There were 699 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.5% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
