As of the census of 2000, there were 1,571 people, 566 households, and 476 families residing in the town. The population density was 43.2 people per square mile (16.7/km²). There were 578 housing units at an average density of 15.9 per square mile (6.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.41% White, 0.13% African American, 0.13% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.

There were 566 households out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.4% were married couples living together, 4.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.9% were non-families. 12.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
