Lamar is located in eastern Hughes County at 35°5?56?N 96°7?31?W? / ?35.09889°N 96.12528°W? / 35.09889; -96.12528 (35.098974, -96.125242). It is 7 miles (11 km) east of Horntown and 15 miles (24 km) east of Holdenville, the county seat.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.0 square miles (31.2 km2), all of it land. Lamar sits at the eastern foot of 1,110-foot (340 m) Lamar Mountain, which rises 350 feet (110 m) over the center of town. Lamar drains to the east via Gobbler Creek to the Canadian River.

As of the census of 2000, there were 172 people, 68 households, and 53 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.3 people per square mile (5.5/km²). There were 77 housing units at an average density of 6.4 per square mile (2.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 86.63% White, 0.58% African American, 10.47% Native American, and 2.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.74% of the population.
