Hewitt was platted in 1891, and named for Henry Hewitt, an early settler. A post office has been in operation at Hewitt since 1891. The Hewitt Public School, built in 1911, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As of the census of 2010, there were 266 people, 113 households, and 64 families residing in the city. The population density was 129.8 inhabitants per square mile (50.1/km2). There were 129 housing units at an average density of 62.9 per square mile (24.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 113 households of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.4% were non-families. 36.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.17.
