As of the census of 2000, there were 808 people, 276 households, and 203 families residing in the town. The population density was 751.2 people per square mile (288.9/km²). There were 313 housing units at an average density of 291.0 per square mile (111.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 48.64% White, 33.79% African American, 0.62% Native American, 15.59% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.56% of the population.

There were 276 households out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 23.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.20.
