A post office called Bourbon has been in operation since 1853. The name Bourbon refers to bourbon whiskey and is believed to be the only town in the United States to be named after bourbon whiskey.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.98% of the population.

There were 652 households of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 16.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 33.6% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
