Ayr had its start in the year 1878 by the building of the railroad through the territory. It was named for Doctor Ayr, a railroad official. Ayr was incorporated as a village in 1883.

As of the census of 2010, there were 94 people, 35 households, and 26 families residing in the village. The population density was 522.2 inhabitants per square mile (201.6/km2). There were 36 housing units at an average density of 200.0 per square mile (77.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 100.0% White.
