The first settlement at Atkinson was made in about 1875. Atkinson was platted in 1880, when the railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Col. John Atkinson, an original owner of the town site.

There were 638 housing units at an average density of 391.4 per square mile (151.1/km2). Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.
