Aplington was originally Fort Aplington, a US Army outpost until the fort burnt down in 1885. By then a small town had been built nearby and, although much of the town's economy was based on serving the fort, managed to survive. The town kept the name of Fort Aplington until 1925 when it was changed to its current name.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,128 people, 461 households, and 308 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,359.0 inhabitants per square mile (524.7/km2). There were 505 housing units at an average density of 608.4 per square mile (234.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 99.2% White, 0.1% African American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.3% of the population.
