The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Tatum has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,175 people, 459 households, and 324 families residing in the city. The population density was 309.9 people per square mile (119.7/km²). There were 523 housing units at an average density of 137.9/sq mi (53.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.62% White, 16.43% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 7.15% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races.
