Local Area Info: Kirkland, New York

The first settlement occurred around 1787 near the present village of Clinton. The Town of Kirkland was established in 1827 from the Town of Paris. The land of the town belonged to the Kirkland Patent, Brothertown Patent, and Coxe Patent.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.9 square miles (88 km2), of which, 33.8 square miles (88 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (0.21%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10,138 people, 3,419 households, and 2,229 families residing in the town. The population density was 300.0 people per square mile (115.8/km²). There were 3,591 housing units at an average density of 106.3 per square mile (41.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.32% White, 1.20% African American, 0.07% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.32% of the population.
