According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.7 km2), of which 3.3 square miles (8.5 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km2), or 2.26%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,113 people, 422 households, and 302 families residing in the town. The population density was 364.0 people per square mile (140.4/km²). There were 467 housing units at an average density of 152.7 per square mile (58.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.96% White, 19.59% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.36% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.44% of the population.
There were 422 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
