Which Drug Testing Panel Should You Choose?

Drug test screenings are organized into panels, with common setups being 5, 10, and 12 drug panels. These panels determine the number of drugs screened, and customized options are also available.

Understanding Drug Tests

A drug test is an analysis of a biological sample—urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or oral fluid—to detect specified drugs or their metabolites. Uses include checking for performance-enhancing steroids in sports, screening for prohibited drugs among employees and parolees, and law enforcement checks of blood alcohol levels (BAC). BAC tests, typically done using a breathalyzer, and urinalysis are widespread in sports and employment contexts.

Potential for Passive Smoke Inhalation to Affect Test Results

"Passive" inhalation of marijuana smoke from simply being in a room with smokers isn't likely to cause a false positive because lab analysis cut-off levels are set to exclude such scenarios.

Other test abnormalities can indicate false negatives or sample adulteration:

  • Low creatinine levels might suggest sample dilution, either by excessive water intake before testing or by adding water to the sample.
  • Creatinine with urine's specific gravity helps detect dilution. Labs may color toilet water blue to prevent sample tampering.
  • Attempts to alter urine with enzymes affect pH levels, which are tested as well.

Drug Detection Windows

The detection or "look-back" period for drug tests depends on several factors, including:

  • Drug quantity
  • Frequency of use
  • Type of drug
  • Individual metabolic rate and health
  • Fluid intake since drug use
  • Exercise frequency since drug use
  • Individual genetic responses to drugs
