Choosing the Right Drug Testing Panel

Drug testing panels refer to groups of substances screened during a drug test. Popular options are 5-panel, 10-panel, and 12-panel tests, which indicate the number of substances analyzed. Custom screenings can also be arranged.

Understanding Drug Testing

A drug test involves the technical analysis of a biological sample, like urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or oral fluid/saliva, to detect the presence or absence of specific drugs or their metabolites. Key drug testing applications include detecting performance-enhancing steroids in sports, screening for illegal substances in employment or probation/parole, and checking blood alcohol content (BAC) with a breathalyzer. Urinalysis is widely used for drug testing in sports and the workplace, though many other methods with different accuracy levels, sensitivity thresholds, and detection periods exist. Drug testing may also involve quantitative analysis to support responsible drug monitoring.

Does Secondhand Smoke Cause a False Positive for Marijuana?

Exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke in a room is unlikely to cause a false positive, as laboratory cut-off levels are set significantly above what passive inhalation might produce.

Other irregularities in the urine screen may suggest a false negative or deliberate sample alteration, such as:

  • A low creatinine level might indicate tampering, such as diluting urine with excessive water intake before testing, or adding water to the sample.
  • Creatinine levels alongside specific gravity checks can help identify diluted samples. To prevent dilution, testing labs may dye the toilet water blue to stop water from being added to samples.
  • Adding certain enzymes can alter urine stability, but these often change the pH, which is also tested.

Drug Detection Timelines

Detection windows in drug testing, or look-back periods, vary based on several factors, including:

  • Drug quantity consumed
  • Frequency of use
  • Type of drug
  • Individual’s metabolic rate and overall health
  • Fluid intake post-consumption
  • Exercise post-consumption
  • Genetic differences affecting drug response
