Choosing the Right Drug Testing Panel

Drug testing panels, which denote the number of substances being screened, commonly include 5, 10, and 12-panel tests, although custom screenings can be arranged.

Understanding Drug Testing

A drug test is a scientific examination of a biological specimen resulting in the detection or absence of specific drugs or their metabolites. Applications range from detecting performance-enhancing steroids in sports to legal and employment-related screenings. Common methods include BAC (blood alcohol content) tests via breathalyzer and urinalysis, widely used across sports and the workplace. Tests can also detail the quantitative analysis of illegal substances to encourage responsible consumption.

Impact of Passive Smoke Inhalation on Marijuana Tests

Inhaling passive smoke from marijuana use is unlikely to result in a false positive. Laboratory thresholds are set well beyond levels that passive exposure might influence.

Urine screen abnormalities like:

  • Low creatinine levels may suggest tampering, such as dilution through excessive water intake or adding water to the sample.
  • Creatinine levels combined with specific gravity can assess dilution. Many labs add blue dye to toilet water to deter dilution.
  • Manipulating urine pH by adding enzymes can alter sample stability, which is frequently assessed in tests.

Drug Detection Periods

The detection period or "look-back" window for drugs varies based on several factors including:

  • Amount taken
  • Frequency of use
  • Drug type
  • Metabolic rate and general health
  • Fluid intake following drug use
  • Physical activity post-consumption
  • Genetic factors affecting drug metabolism
