The Purpose of a Drug Test

A drug test analyzes biological samples like urine, hair, blood, saliva, or breath to detect drugs or their metabolites. Uses include detecting performance-enhancing drugs in sports, ensuring workplace compliance, and law enforcement alcohol testing. BAC tests typically use breathalyzers, while urinalysis is common in workplace and sports.

Impact of Passive Smoke on Marijuana Test Results

"Passive" exposure to marijuana smoke does not typically result in a false positive, as testing thresholds are set above levels achievable by passive inhalation.

Abnormalities in urine samples might suggest a false negative or sample tampering:

  • Low creatinine levels suggest dilution or tampering, often checked alongside specific gravity.
  • Labs may utilize blue coloring in toilets to prevent dilution with toilet water.
  • Enzymatic additions can alter pH and are also tested.

How Long Do Drugs Remain Detectable?

Detection windows vary based on several factors:

  • Quantity and frequency of drug use
  • Drug type
  • Individual's metabolism and health
  • Fluid intake and physical activity post-use
  • Genetic differences affecting drug processing
