Understanding Drug Tests
A drug test analyzes biological specimens such as urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva to detect drugs or their metabolites. Tests serve various purposes, such as detecting sports-enhancing steroids, verifying legal compliance for employees, or determining alcohol concentration via BAC tests. While urinalysis is predominant in sports and workplaces, multiple methods exist with distinct accuracy and detection durations. Tests might also provide chemical analyses of illegal drugs to inform safe use.
Does Passive Marijuana Smoke Cause a False Positive?
"Passive" inhalation from surrounding smoke is deemed invalid; lab cut-offs are established well beyond passive exposure levels.
Irregularities in test results could suggest a false negative or attempted sample tampering. Example issues leading to suspicion:
- Low creatinine values may suggest sample tampering via dilution or water addition.
- Creatinine checks, in combination with specific gravity, help detect dilution attempts. Some labs deter sample contamination by coloring toilet water blue.
- Specimen tampering attempts, like enzyme addition, often change pH, which is also analyzed.
Drug Retention in the Body:
The detection range of a drug test is determined by several factors. Influencing elements for drug presence duration include:
- Drug dosage
- Consumption frequency
- Drug type
- Personal metabolic rate and health
- Fluid intake post-consumption
- Physical activity after use
- Genetic factors affecting drug metabolism

Local Area Info: Reno, Nevada
Reno (/?ri?no?/ REE-noh) is a city in the U.S. state of Nevada, located in the northwestern part of the state, approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Lake Tahoe. Known as "The Biggest Little City in the World", Reno is known for its casino industry. It is the county seat of Washoe County. The city sits in a high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and its downtown area (along with Sparks) occupies a valley informally known as the Truckee Meadows. The city is named after Union Major General Jesse L. Reno, who was killed in action at the Battle of South Mountain on Fox's Gap.
Reno, with an estimated population of 248,853 as of 2017, is the fourth-most populous city in Nevada after Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas, all three of those cities being part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Reno is the most populous city in the state outside of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Reno is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area which consists of all of Washoe and Storey counties.
Archaeological finds place the eastern border for the prehistoric Martis people in the Reno area. As early as the mid 1850s a few pioneers settled in the Truckee Meadows, a relatively fertile valley through which the Truckee River made its way from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. In addition to subsistence farming, these early residents could pick up business from travelers along the California Trail, which followed the Truckee westward, before branching off towards Donner Lake, where the formidable obstacle of the Sierra Nevada began.
