Understanding Drug Testing Panels

Drug testing groups, or panels, refer to a set of substances screened during a test. Common configurations include 5-panel, 10-panel, and 12-panel tests, which define the number of substances tested. Customized panels are also available to suit specific needs.

Defining a Drug Test

A drug test is a technical analysis of a biological specimen—such as urine, hair, or blood—to check for specified drugs or their metabolites. Uses include detecting performance-enhancing drugs in sports and screening for prohibited substances by employers or law enforcement. BAC (blood alcohol content) is often measured with a breathalyzer while urine tests are common in workplaces. Numerous methods exist, each with varying accuracy and detection durations. Drug tests can also quantitatively analyze illegal drugs.

Passive Smoke Inhalation and False Positives

"Passive" inhalation of marijuana smoke from being near smokers typically doesn't cause false positives, as lab cut-off levels exceed those from passive exposure.

Urine test abnormalities might suggest false negatives or sample manipulation, such as:

  • Low creatinine might suggest urine dilution, either from excess water intake before testing or added water.
  • Creatinine and specific gravity are measured to detect sample dilution. Labs may color toilet water to discourage dilution.
  • Enzymes intended to stabilize the sample might affect pH, also measured during testing.

Factors Influencing Drug Detection Periods

The detection window for drugs depends on various factors, including:

  • Drug dosage
  • Frequency of use
  • Type of drug
  • Individual metabolic rate and overall health
  • Fluids consumed post-drug ingestion
  • Exercise post-drug ingestion
  • Genetic differences affecting drug processing

Local Area Info: Port Arthur, Texas

Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small portion extends into Orange County. It is 90 mi (140 km) east of Houston. It is host to the largest oil refinery in the United States (the 600,000 bpd Saudi Aramco - Motiva Enterprises refinery).

The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census, down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. Early attempts at settlements in the area had all failed. However, in 1895, Arthur Stilwell founded Port Arthur, and the town quickly grew. Port Arthur was incorporated as a city in 1898 and soon developed into a seaport. It eventually became the center of a large oil refinery network. The Rainbow Bridge across the Neches River connects Port Arthur to Bridge City.

Aurora was an early settlement attempt near the mouth of Taylor Bayou on Sabine Lake, about 14 miles (23 km) long and 7 miles (11 km) wide. It is a saltwater estuary formed by the confluence of the Neches and Sabine rivers. Through its tidal outlet, 5-mile-long (8 km) Sabine Pass, Sabine Lake drains some 50,000 sq mi (100,000 km2) of Texas and Louisiana into the Gulf of Mexico.
