Selecting Your Drug Testing Panel

Drug testing panels refer to specific groups screened by a test. Common setups include 5, 10, and 12-panel tests, specifying the number of substances checked. Custom screenings are also available.

Understanding Drug Tests

A drug test is the technical evaluation of a biological specimen, such as urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva, to identify specific drugs or metabolites. Applications include detecting performance-enhancing drugs in sports, legal compliance for employers, parole screening, and alcohol detection by law enforcement. The latter is often conducted through a breathalyzer, while urinalysis dominates sports and workplace testing. Various methods exist, offering different accuracy, sensitivity, and detection periods. A drug test may also quantify illegal substances to encourage responsible use.

Does Passive Marijuana Smoke Lead to False Positives?

Exposure to "passive" marijuana smoke is unlikely to cause a false positive, as lab cut-off thresholds exceed expected levels from indirect exposure.

Other anomalies in urine samples might suggest false negatives or tampering attempts. For instance:

  • Low creatinine levels might imply sample dilution, either by excessive water intake before testing or water addition to the urine sample.
  • Creatinine is often measured alongside specific gravity to detect sample dilution. To counter this, labs might dye toilet water blue, ensuring it isn't used for sample dilution.
  • Attempts to add enzymes to alter the urine's stability may inadvertently change its pH, which gets tested too.

Duration of Drug Presence in the System

The detection or "look back" period for drugs varies based on:

  • Quantity consumed
  • Frequency of usage
  • Type of drug
  • Individual metabolic rate and health
  • Fluid intake post-ingestion
  • Exercise post-ingestion
  • Genetic variations impacting drug response

Local Area Info: Olympia, Washington

Olympia is the capital of the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of Thurston County. European settlers claimed the area in 1846, with the Treaty of Medicine Creek initiated in 1854, and the Treaty of Olympia initiated in January 1856.

Olympia was incorporated as a town on January 28, 1859, and as a City in 1882. The population was 46,479 as of the 2010 census, making it the 24th largest city in the state. The city borders Lacey to the east and Tumwater to the south. Olympia is a cultural center of the southern Puget Sound region. Olympia is located 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Seattle, the largest city in the state of Washington.

The site of Olympia has been home to Lushootseed-speaking peoples known as the Steh-Chass (or Stehchass; who became part of the post-treaty Squaxin Island Tribe) for thousands of years. Other Native Americans regularly visited the head of Budd Inlet and the Steh-Chass including the other ancestor tribes of the Squaxin, as well as the Nisqually, Puyallup, Chehalis, Suquamish, and Duwamish. The first recorded Europeans came to Olympia in 1792. Peter Puget and a crew from the British Vancouver Expedition are said to have explored the site, but neither recorded any encounters with the resident Indigenous population here. In 1846, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Smith jointly claimed the land that now comprises downtown Olympia. In 1851, the U.S. Congress established the Customs District of Puget Sound for Washington Territory and Olympia became the home of the customs house. Its population steadily expanded from Oregon Trail immigrants. In 1850, the town settled on the name Olympia, at the suggestion of local resident Colonel Isaac N. Ebey, due to its view of the Olympic Mountains to the Northwest. The area began to be served by a small fleet of steamboats known as the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet.
