Understanding a Drug Test
A drug test analyzes biological specimens—such as urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva—to detect specific drugs or their metabolites. Applications include testing for performance-enhancing drugs in sports, drug screening in workplaces, and alcohol content checks (BAC) via breathalyzers, frequently related to legal settings. Numerous testing methods vary in accuracy, sensitivity, and detection timeframes. Additionally, drug tests may quantitatively analyze illegal drugs for responsible use.
Does Passive Smoke Inhalation Cause a False Positive for Marijuana?
"Passive" inhalation from being in a room with cannabis smokers isn't a concern, as lab thresholds are set beyond the level attainable from passive smoke. Abnormal urine screen results may imply false negatives or sample tampering:
- Low creatinine levels may suggest tampering through overhydration or direct sample dilution.
- Creatinine and specific gravity levels help determine sample dilution. Testing labs may color toilet water to avert sample tampering.
- Adding enzymes to alter sample stability may change pH, also assessed during testing.
How Long Do Drugs Remain Detectable?
The detection window for drugs in your system depends on several factors, such as:
- Quantity of drug used
- Usage frequency
- Type of drug
- Metabolic rate and overall health
- Volume of fluids consumed post-ingestion
- Level of physical activity after usage
- Genetic factors affecting drug response
