Selecting the Right Drug Testing Panel

Drug testing groups, known as panels, vary by the number of drugs they screen. Common panels include 5, 10, and 12-drug tests. Customized screenings are also available.

Understanding Drug Testing

Drug testing involves analyzing biological specimens like urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva for specific drugs or their metabolites. Applications include testing for illicit substances in sports, workplace, and legal settings. Breathalyzers assess alcohol levels, while urinalysis is used prevalently elsewhere. Different methods vary in accuracy, cut-off levels, and detection times.

Potential for False Positives from Secondhand Marijuana Smoke

Secondhand exposure from being in the vicinity of marijuana smokers does not typically trigger a positive result, as lab cutoffs are well above passive inhalation levels.

Some urine test abnormalities might suggest deliberate sample tampering, yielding false negatives. Examples include:

  • Low creatinine levels may indicate dilution, either from excessive water intake before the test or added water.
  • Combining creatinine with specific gravity helps detect dilution. Labs may color toilet water to prevent sample contamination.
  • The addition of enzymes to samples affects stability and can alter pH, which is also tested.

Drug Detection Durations

Detection times in tests vary based on factors like:

  • Dosage of the drug
  • Frequency of use
  • Type of drug
  • Individual metabolism and health
  • Fluid intake post-consumption
  • Physical activity post-consumption
  • Genetic differences influencing drug response
