Understanding Drug Tests
Drug tests analyze biological specimens like urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, and/or saliva to detect the presence or absence of specific drugs or their metabolites. These tests are widely used in sports doping detection, employer screenings for illegal substances, and law enforcement alcohol blood tests using breathalyzers. Other methods vary in accuracy, detection thresholds, and periods. There are also tests for quantitative analysis, often used in responsible drug use.
Can Passive Smoke Inhalation Cause a False Positive for Marijuana?
Passive inhalation from being in a room with marijuana smokers will not result in a false positive. Laboratory cut-off values are set above levels attainable by passive exposure.
Urine tests may show abnormalities like false negatives or signs of tampering. For example:
- Low creatinine could indicate urine dilution, either through water intake before testing or adding water to the sample.
- Creatinine levels, along with specific gravity, assist in recognizing diluted samples. Labs may use blue toilet water to prevent dilution.
- Some individuals might add enzymes to affect sample stability, but this usually alters the pH, which is also checked during testing.
Drug Presence Duration in the System
The detection window varies and depends on factors like:
- Amount of drug consumed
- Frequency of use
- Type of drug used
- Individual metabolic rate and overall health
- Fluid intake after drug use
- Physical activity after drug consumption
- Genetic factors affecting drug response
