TB Testing Options & Their Uses

Tuberculosis (TB) testing is essential for identifying TB infections early and preventing the spread of disease. TB tests are often required for healthcare workers, school employees, government positions, or travel. At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer both traditional and modern TB testing options to meet your compliance and health needs.

1. Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) – Mantoux Test

The Mantoux tuberculin skin test is the most common TB screening method. It involves injecting a small amount of tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) just under the skin on the forearm.

How it works:
  • Patient returns in 48–72 hours to have the injection site evaluated.
  • Swelling or hardness at the site may indicate TB exposure.
Used for:
  • Routine employment screenings
  • Healthcare & school settings
  • Annual surveillance testing

2. TB Blood Test – QuantiFERON®-TB Gold (QFT)

The QuantiFERON-TB Gold test is a modern, FDA-approved blood test that measures how the immune system reacts to TB bacteria. It is a single-visit alternative to the skin test.

How it works:
  • A blood sample is drawn and analyzed for TB-specific antigens.
  • Results are typically available within 24–48 hours.
Used for:
  • Individuals who received the BCG vaccine
  • Convenient one-visit screening
  • Healthcare, immigration, and high-risk population screenings

3. Chest X-Ray (Follow-Up)

A chest x-ray is not a diagnostic test for TB infection but is used when a TB skin or blood test returns a positive result. It checks for signs of active TB disease in the lungs.

Used for:
  • Confirmation after a positive skin or blood test
  • Employment clearance when latent TB is suspected
