OSHA Audiogram Requirements & Benefits

OSHA Audiogram Requirements & Their Benefits

What is an Audiogram?

An audiogram is a graph that shows the results of a hearing test. It displays an individual’s hearing sensitivity at various frequencies and sound levels. Under OSHA's occupational noise exposure standards (29 CFR 1910.95), audiometric testing is required for employees exposed to high levels of workplace noise.

OSHA Audiometric Testing Requirements

OSHA requires employers to establish a hearing conservation program when noise exposure equals or exceeds an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 85 decibels (dB). A key component of this program includes baseline and annual audiograms.

Required Components:

  • Baseline Audiogram: Must be conducted within 6 months of an employee’s first exposure to noise levels at or above 85 dB (TWA).
  • Annual Audiogram: Conducted yearly to detect any hearing loss compared to the baseline.
  • Follow-Up: If a standard threshold shift (STS) is detected, follow-up evaluations and protective measures are required.

Who Must Comply?

Any employer with workers exposed to potentially hazardous noise levels must comply with OSHA's hearing conservation standards. Industries such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing are most commonly affected.

Benefits of Audiograms and Hearing Conservation

  • Early Detection of Hearing Loss: Identifies changes in hearing before permanent damage occurs.
  • Improved Workplace Safety: Ensures workers can hear warning signals, alarms, and instructions clearly.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Helps businesses stay compliant with OSHA and avoid fines or legal action.
  • Better Worker Health: Reduces the long-term health risks associated with occupational noise exposure.
  • Lower Costs: Preventing hearing loss helps avoid workers’ compensation claims and reduces the need for hearing aids and other medical expenses.
