As of the census of 2000, there were 615 people, 254 households, and 167 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,191.3 people per square mile (456.6/km²). There were 283 housing units at an average density of 548.2 per square mile (210.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 31.87% White, 67.80% African American, 0.16% Native American and 0.16% Pacific Islander. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.49% of the population.

There were 254 households out of which 39.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.8% were married couples living together, 35.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town, the population was spread out with 32.5% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older.
