Mount Vernon is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,575 as of the 2010 census, and was estimated to have a population of 4,553 as of 2016.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,575 people, 1,810 households, and 1,101 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,182.2 inhabitants per square mile (456.4/km2). There were 2,013 housing units at an average density of 520.2 per square mile (200.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.3% White, 0.4% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.

There were 1,810 households of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.2% were non-families. 34.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.96.
