Accredited Drug Testing in Warren, Wisconsin provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, our company excels in this domain, offering services nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various tailored testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly been a preferred method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are now favoring this over the standard urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers rely on hair testing. Its extended detection period, up to 90 days, and observed collection ensure accuracy and minimal cheating. For drug detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to approximately 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional requirements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage of handling a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further specimen hair is extracted for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analysis. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: The difficulty of cheating on a hair drug analysis ensures more precise outcomes.
  • Retrospective data: It provides a chronic pattern of drug use over time, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair usually takes 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
