Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessment in New Richmond, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair testing, we boast testing facilities across all U.S. cities ready to conduct hair analyses. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing choices is available.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years, often supplanting traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse professionals. It aligns with strict no-drug policies as it offers a longer detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected in a supervised manner, making evasion nearly unfeasible. Nonetheless, urine tests maintain superior accuracy for recent substance use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate up to a roughly three-month period of drug and alcohol detection. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing around 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a specimen into a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the specimen was sealed and sent appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to rule out drug consumption for most specimens, any positive screen results must be verified to be court-eligible. Specimens with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical information: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
