Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Baldwin, Wisconsin. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in this method, with facilities available in cities nationwide for hair sample testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used in most cases. Hair tests are effective for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor the hair follicle over traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair tests for stricter compliance over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is ideal for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases, offering an extended detection range up to 90 days, an overseen collection process, and is highly resistant to tampering. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reflect substance use over roughly a three-month period. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Acquiring a sample length of 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a proportional quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase involves a preliminary, rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive from Screening will require a subsequent confirmation step.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this process, the drug compounds are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are adequately washed as part of the confirmation process when necessary. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The difficulty in altering hair drug test results enhances their reliability.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
