Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Texarkana, Texas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and maintains testing centers across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is needed. Hair tests can be tailored to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more popular in drug testing methodologies. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected in an observed environment, making it nearly irrefutable. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has evolved into an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate three-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and corroboration. For EtG, added tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen is recommended. If no scalp hair is available, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair are exclusively about scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in the lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step entails confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a court-admissible result demands confirmation of a positive screen. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample demonstrates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirming any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessitated. The thorough laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • High resistance to manipulation: It's extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Documents historical patterns: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over a duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing types.
  • Outcomes variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variance can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
