Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Atlanta, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers available in numerous cities across the United States equipped to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analyses.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has risen in drug testing procedures. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly choosing hair drug tests over customary urine tests. This choice is especially pertinent for employers upholding strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection range for drug presence, typically up to 90 days, performed under observation, making tampering exceedingly difficult. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within the fibers as they grow, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a timeframe of up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in labs involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample is processed into the lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to be legally admissible. Any samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing markedly surpasses urine testing by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. In Atlanta, TX, the extended window for detection provided by hair analysis presents a clear advantage over the limited timeframe of urine tests. By identifying drug use over a prolonged period, hair testing paints a more complete picture of an individual's history.

Additionally, the rigorous testing process implemented in hair analysis ensures a heightened level of fraud protection compared to urine tests. Hair testing’s superior accuracy makes it the preferred choice for employers seeking to enforce stringent drug-free policies and for those seeking assurance of reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Atlanta, TX, hair follicle testing stands out for its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This expansive detection window allows employers to access a detailed view of a candidate's or employee's substance history. Unlike other methods, hair analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of an individual's long-term behavior, aiding in informed decision-making.

This extended timeline offers reassurance for organizations aiming to establish a safe and drug-free workplace environment. By presenting a historical perspective on substance use, hair follicle testing empowers employers to make more deliberate hiring and retention choices, optimizing their workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Atlanta, TX, hair follicle testing emerges as a highly tamper-resistant method, offering substantial protection against sample adulteration. This makes it the ideal choice for those seeking unequivocal testing outcomes. The inherent difficulty in tampering with hair samples ensures that results are reliable and valid, providing peace of mind to all involved.

Hair testing's robust procedure effectively minimizes the risk of manipulating test outputs. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
