In Wake Village, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive tests for hair follicles. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, no worries! Our expertise lies in hair evaluations, with centers available nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the scalp or body. Hair tests can analyze for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, with various testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more popular for screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts prefer this method over usual urine tests. This method suits firms with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals under supervision. It detects drug use over 90 days reliably, using a supervised collection to prevent tampering. Yet, urine tests remain best for recent drug usage within last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Use a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the lab comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial intake of a sample into the lab system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any data entry not supplied by electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary drug use check. This cost-effective stage helps exclude drug use in most samples, but positive results must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples positive during Screening require another verification step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating is challenging: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, which enhances accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It indicates drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become apparent in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
