Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Schulenburg, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with test centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair evaluation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair investigations can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair drug evaluation over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers with drug-free workplace policies, courts, and probation departments. Their main advantage is a longer drug detection window, generally up to 90 days, with minimal risk of falsification. Nonetheless, to identify substance use within the preceding 5 days, urine testing remains the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term repository for biomarkers by embedding them within the strands of developing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a matching amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test process in laboratories consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial process of integrating a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not furnished by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for detecting drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court proceedings. Samples with a preliminary positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a preliminary positive during the Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to fake, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can show a history of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
