Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Center, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and has facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing often involves hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, the judiciary, and experts in Substance Abuse are opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation supervisors. Hair follicle testing offers a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. Conversely, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair shaft as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and substances of up to roughly 3 months. It is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair represents any other types of hair (facial, axillary, and more).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary speedy evaluation for abuse drugs. While Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive finding must be verified to be considered valid in legal settings. Any samples that exhibit presumptive positives during Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation when required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a reduced detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals historical data: It can indicate drug use trends over an extended time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Expenses: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Although commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
