Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Grange, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drugs or alcohol tests. We have extensive testing centers throughout the nation capable of performing hair analysis. Required hair length includes 1.5 to 2 inches. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence over traditional methods. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair testing over urine analysis. Hair tests are crucial for entities with zero-tolerance policies, providing an extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Despite its efficacy, a urine test remains optimal for recent substance detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of these substances by encasing markers within the hair fibers as they develop. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can offer an approximately 90-day detection period for both alcohol and drugs. This method of sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be retrieved, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processes involved in integrating a sample into a laboratory system, such as ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be valid for legal use. Presumptive positives identified in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drug extraction occurs at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are very resistant to cheating, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows usage trends: These tests illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Typically, hair drug tests are more expensive than other drug testing formats.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
