Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Manor, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in hair testing, with centers in all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either on the head’s crown or the body, for testing. Hair tests can be configured to screen for various drug, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are often opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation systems. The primary advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over a lengthy period of up to 90 days, complemented by an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the progressively growing hair shaft. When procured from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair sampling is straightforward, somewhat tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the prime sample for screening and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When specifying head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes other hair varieties (such as facial and axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system. This phase comprises verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift detection for any drugs of misuse. While Screening is economically feasible for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be permissible in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva tests), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter analysis period.
  • Reduced chance of deception: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over some time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
