In Pflugerville, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body hair can be utilized. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer it over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary sectors. The advantage lies in the extended 90-day detection window, ensured with observed collection and resistance to tampering. When screening recent usage within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When retrieved from near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tricky to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for screening and verifying. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. Reference to head hair pertains only to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic evidence chain system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Upon a sample showing tentative positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation where necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the standards of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical consumption: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
