Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Elgin, Texas. When in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is the specialist, with centers available nationwide for convenient hair screening. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed for tests, which can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing in recent times has become increasingly common. Many organizations, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing, favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation officers, offers a more extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection that's challenging to tamper with. Urine tests, however, excel in detecting drugs ingested within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day history of alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair is recommended. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be substituted. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug sample involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample processing within the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary manual data inputs absent in a digital chain of custody setup.

Screening provides a quick preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive screens require confirmation to be viable in legal proceedings. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Samples indicated as positive during Screening undergo hair collection from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternatives (e.g., urine, oral fluid), presenting hair drug testing as a more intricate procedure.

Any positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples needing confirmation are cleansed if necessary before final analysis. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can show drug use for up to 90 days, a longer timeframe than urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug testing is tough to deceive, providing more reliable results.
  • Records drug use history: It reveals substance use patterns over time, unlike tests focusing on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drug detection in hair requires 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
