Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Auburn, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our facilities across the nation, including New Auburn, can conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or, in some cases, the body. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard approach. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation professionals often prefer hair tests over urine tests. The main advantage is the extended detection timeline of around 90 days, along with the challenge it poses to tampering. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. This process captures drug and alcohol biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, thereby offering a prolonged history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can reflect a detection timeline of up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp equals 100mg, the preferred sample size for testing and verification. An amount of 150mg is advised for EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels. Utilization of a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be absent, a proportional amount of body hair can serve as an alternative. In this context, 'head hair' pertains solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' covers all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipment of a sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails an initial, swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to ascertain drug use in the majority of samples, any positive result requires confirmation to hold up in court. All samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening need subsequent verification.

When a Screening stage result suggests positivity, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for further preparation in the Extraction stage. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to Confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are washed as required. Every segment of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reflect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to attempts at cheating, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers past usage data: Can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time as opposed to merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inefficient for recent detection: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to appear in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair may vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the strand of hair rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
