Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Glencoe, Minnesota. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair-based analysis, with facilities available nationwide including all major cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required, and assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle testing for drugs has become more prevalent. This method is increasingly favored by employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse specialists over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation services, offering a detection window of up to 90 days, and are collected under strict supervision to prevent tampering. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the hair as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. In the context of head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory analysis for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary inclusion of a sample into the laboratory's system. This procedure involves confirming that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for it to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening stands as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any screening results indicating positive drugs is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive specimen undergoes washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards ISO / IEC 17025.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, a longer period than urine tests, which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to determine recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
